Stuart A. Shorenstein joined the firm’s New York office in April 2009 as a Member in the Business Law Department. Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner with Wolf Block LLP in New York.
A member in the Corporate Law Group, Mr. Shorenstein has more than 30 years of experience in communications law in New York and Washington, D.C. Over the years, he has represented in New York and Washington, D.C., group owners of broadcast stations and cable systems, media lending groups at major financial institutions and venture capital financers in connection with regulatory, transactional and operational issues in the media industry.
Mr. Shorenstein works with Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies, advocating for clients with decision-makers in all branches of local, state, and federal government. This team includes former elected and appointed public officials at all levels, and professionals who have the knowledge and experience to create winning strategies for protecting clients’ interests, presenting their positions, and ensuring that their voices are heard.
Mr. Shorenstein has lectured at numerous national conventions and is the author of several articles on the communications industry. His published work includes the chapter on the future of public television in the book
American Media, and articles and commentaries published in the
Federal Communications Bar Journal, the
St. John’s Journal of Legal Commentary, the
New York Law Journal,
Broadcasting and Cable,
The Daily Deal and other journals.
Mr. Shorenstein was the first member from outside of Washington, D.C., to serve on the Executive Committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA). He has served as an officer of the FCBA and has co-chaired its Law Journal, Membership and Mass Media Committees, and is current chair of its Transactional Practice Committee and co-chair of its New York Chapter. In 1995, he received that association's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.
Mr. Shorenstein is General Counsel and a member of the board of directors of the International Radio and Television Society. He also has served as a member of the Subcommittee on Communications Law of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and as a Director of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.
Mr. Shorenstein served as a member of the Clinton/Gore transition team focusing on the operations of the Federal Communications Commission. He also helped lead the transition team for then-Attorney General-Elect Elliot Spitzer. He has been active in the judicial selection process in New York and served as Administrator of the 1995 Independent Judicial Screening Panel to recommend the most highly qualified candidates for judgeships in New York City. has also acted as an arbitrator in litigated disputes involving the telecommunications industry.
Mr. Shorenstein earned his law degree from New York University School of Law, where he was named a University Scholar, and his undergraduate degree from Duke University. He is a member of the bars of the State of New York and the District of Columbia.
