Marc Fink and Matthew Howell contributed the introductory chapter to the Chambers 2020 Shipping Guide, discussing the issues that the shipping industry will face in 2020. They explain how it will continue to be at the forefront of ongoing, or threatened trade disputes between major economic forces such as the United States, China, and the European Union. The shipping industry will now also begin to witness real-time effects of the International Maritime Organization’s Low Sulphur Regulation, which requires shipping companies to begin reducing sulphur emissions by 85 percent. The article goes on to discuss how as the shipping industry continues to go through a period of lower profit margins, shipping companies have continued to cooperate on operational matters in order to increase efficiency throughout the industry.
