Can an Employer Fire Workers Who Are Scared to Return to the Office?

Howard Schweitzer and Michael Schmidt were quoted in SHRM discussing what businesses should do if an employee refuses to come back to work when they re-open. Howard and Mike both stated  "employers need to plan and create appropriate policies and protocols to account for the once-in-a-century issues" continuing into 2021. At the same time, businesses need to maintain "a corporate mindset that also allows for flexibility, compassion and accommodation under certain circumstances to effectively balance the employer's right to operate its business productively and [maintain] employee morale and rights under applicable laws."
