Alissa Christopher, member of the firm's Global Insurance Department, was recognized as the Volunteer of the Week by the Human Rights Initiative (HRI) of North Texas. Alissa has volunteered as a pro bono attorney with the HRI since 2018. She is a dedicated advocate for HRI's juvenile clients and works to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of immigration law. Currently, she is working to acquire a work permit for her client after a recent rule change.
"HRI is important to me for many reasons," says Alissa, "I've always admired the mission of HRI. Affording a person a chance to live in safety with basic human dignities is extremely important work and am honored to contribute even in the tiniest way."
The HRI of North Texas provides free legal and social services to refugees and immigrants who have suffered human rights abuses. In 2021, HRI volunteers donated services valued at $2.8 million. Skilled pro bono attorneys are the backbone of their success; since the agency's inception, HRI has won 87 percent of its asylum cases and 99 percent of its other legal cases.
HRI writes, "We are honored to have you on our team, Alissa. Thanks to precise work like yours, we are able to offer high-quality legal services 100 percent free to our clients."
