John R. Ewell was quoted in the Law360 article “The Top Environmental Insurance Trends Of 2024.” The article looks at a few of the most important environmental stories in insurance over the past year, while considering how things might shape up in 2024.
In the article, John said that he attributed elevated reinsurance costs to inflation, high litigation expenses, and an increased risk of natural catastrophes. Many direct carriers and reinsurers withdrew from Florida's market because of hurricanes, but also the high number of litigated property damage claims. Carriers have withdrawn from California's market for similar reasons. “Given these trends and feelings of uncertainty, I expect reinsurance premiums to increase, or at least remain level, in 2024," Ewell told Law360.
