Five Cozen O’Connor Intellectual Property Attorneys Recognized by IAM Patent 1000

Tuesday, August 8, 2023

IAM Patent 1000 has named Frank Abramonte, Thomas Fisher, Keith Fredlake, Jeffrey Gendzwill, and Edward Weisz to their 2023 list. The practice was also recommended for patent prosecution in the Washington, D.C., metro area.

This was the first time the Patent Practice was named in the rankings in large part due to its significant strategic growth over the past year. IAM Patent 1000 stated, “The team are highly astute portfolio managers but also have the capability to represent clients in all contentious forums, from district courts to the ITC.”

Abramonte is co-chair of the firm’s Patent Prosecution Practice and focuses on patent procurement and portfolio strategizing in electrical, software, electro-mechanical engineering, and medical device related technologies. In addition, he provides services in licensing, diligence exercises, and validity and infringement studies and opinions, as well as related litigation counseling. He counsels various businesses, from established public companies to early and late stage startup businesses.

Fisher focuses his practice on complex electrical, mechanical, and computer software patent litigation. He is an experienced first-chair attorney with extensive experience in the federal district courts, in § 337 proceedings before the International Trade Commission, in post-grant review proceedings, including AIA proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and in appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His litigation experience includes matters directed to electrical and mechanical technologies such as software, encryption, GPS systems, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, mechanical devices, medical devices, and aseptic packaging systems.

Fredlake is a registered patent attorney whose practice includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications; working with clients on design patents; and counseling clients on issues regarding the patentability of inventions, patent rights in foreign countries, and the infringement and validity of U.S. patents. He also regularly performs portfolio review for clients, including freedom-to-operate, invalidity, patentability, and opposition searches. He is also experienced in preparing invalidity and non-infringement options for utility and design patents. His clients are primarily in the chemical and life sciences industry, including chemistry, chemical engineering, oil and gas-petrochemicals, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals.

Gendzwill is co-chair of the firm’s Patent Prosecution Practice and a registered patent attorney who concentrates his practice on patent-related matters, focusing on client counseling, portfolio strategy and management, U.S. and foreign patent preparation/prosecution, and post-grant proceedings. His practice spans a wide range of technologies, focusing on the chemical and life sciences industry, including chemical engineering, chemistry, clean energy, and nutritional/pharmaceutical supplements, as well as mechanical and biomechanical engineering, nanotechnology, physics, composite materials, and medical devices. He also has extensive experience preparing complex patentability, invalidity, non-infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions, as well as state-of-the-art analyses. He has represented multiple clients in offensive and defensive disputes before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Weisz is co-chair of the firm’s Patent Prosecution Practice and focuses on U.S. patent and trademark prosecution, counseling, and licensing. He prosecutes patent applications and renders legal opinions and advises clients on infringement, freedom to operate, and validity issues in the electrical, mechanical, consumer products, product packaging, and business method.
