David Adams was quoted in an HR Dive article discussing the importance of conducting Form I-9 self-audits before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, as increased enforcement of I-9 regulations is anticipated. David noted that proactive efforts to correct mistakes could reduce fines, explaining, “If you go through an I-9 audit by the government, your fines will be less if you show effort that errors were identified and previously corrected, as opposed to falsifying documents.”
Additionally, he urged employers to begin these audits immediately, as a lack of a strong I-9 program may be exposed under the new administration. Enforcement is expected to target industries with past violations, such as agriculture and hospitality, as well as companies with previous issues. David added, “They’re going to go after those industries first and try to crack down on those immediately.”
